  • Existing connections — is gas already connected, or would a gas system require a new connection
  • Space — heat pump systems need adequate airflow around the unit and can be larger than a standard tank
  • Timeframe — if the existing system has failed and hot water is out, the realistic options narrow to what can be installed quickly; if replacement is planned ahead of failure, there’s more flexibility to compare options properly
