First: Is it Just One Tap or the Whole House?
Turn on multiple taps throughout the house. If the pressure is low on all taps, the problem is likely in the main supply or throughout the pipe system. If it’s just one tap or one area, the problem is more localised.
Common Causes of Low Water Pressure in Melbourne
1. Blocked Aerator or Showerhead
The aerator is the small mesh screen at the tip of your tap. Melbourne’s water contains minerals that can build up and restrict flow. Unscrew the aerator and clean or replace it — this is a quick DIY fix.
2. Pressure Limiting Valve (PLV) Set Too Low
Most Melbourne properties have a Pressure Limiting Valve installed where the water enters the property. This valve controls the pressure to protect your plumbing. If it’s set below 300kPa or has failed, pressure throughout the house will be low. A plumber can adjust or replace it.
3. Corroded or Clogged Galvanised Pipes
Melbourne homes built before the 1970s often have galvanised steel pipes. Over decades, rust and mineral deposits build up inside the pipe, narrowing the internal diameter and reducing flow. This is a progressive problem — repiping in copper or PEX is the long-term solution.
4. Partially Closed Isolation Valve
If someone partially closed the main isolation valve (at the meter or inside the home) during previous work and didn’t fully reopen it, pressure will be low throughout. Check that all valves are fully open.
5. Hidden Water Leak
A burst or leaking pipe can reduce pressure elsewhere in the system. If pressure has dropped suddenly, check for wet spots in the yard, unusually green lawn patches, or a water meter that’s running when no taps are on.
6. Council Supply Issue
If your neighbours also have low pressure, the issue may be with Yarra Valley Water or City West Water’s supply. Check their outage notices online or call them to report the issue.
