Looking for a plumber to change over a toilet in McKinnon? Sedcon Plumbing is a few minutes up the road in Bentleigh. Licensed, insured, and most swaps finished in one visit with the price agreed before we start.
McKinnon runs from interwar homes near the station through to newer townhouses built in the last decade, and the two have very different plumbing. Older homes often need the waste adapted to suit a modern suite; the newer builds are usually a straight swap. Worth knowing which you have before you buy a pan.
What we install
Close-coupled — the standard cistern-on-pan suite and the most common replacement we do in McKinnon. Usually the quickest swap.
Back-to-wall — the pan sits flush against the wall, hiding the pipework and making it easier to clean around.
Wall-hung with in-wall cistern — the pan mounts off the wall with the cistern concealed in the cavity. Best look, but it needs a compatible wall structure and takes longer. Worth planning into a renovation rather than retrofitting.
Smart and bidet suites — these need a power point within reach and sometimes a dedicated water connection. Ask before you buy.
What affects the price
The biggest single factor is the set-out — the distance from the finished wall to the centre of the waste outlet. If the new suite’s set-out does not match the old one, the waste has to be adapted or moved. That is the most common cause of an unexpected extra on a toilet changeover.
Also relevant: concrete floors, in-wall cistern work that opens up a wall, old or corroded stop taps, and access on upper levels. If any of it turns up we tell you before we do it, not on the invoice.
Water efficiency
Every suite sold in Australia carries a WELS star rating. A 4-star dual flush uses roughly 4.5 litres on a full flush and 3 on a half, against about 11 litres for a pre-1990s single flush. We will fit whatever you have bought, but if you are still choosing, that difference shows up on the bill.
Compliance in Victoria
Replacing a toilet is regulated plumbing work. It must be carried out by a licensed or registered plumber, and for work over $750 you are entitled to a Compliance Certificate — proof the work meets the Plumbing Regulations, and something you will want if you sell or make an insurance claim.
Sedcon is VBA-licensed (Licence 120392) and covered by public liability insurance. You get your certificate where the job qualifies, without having to ask.
How long it takes
A like-for-like swap is normally one visit. Back-to-wall suites take longer where the set-out differs, and in-wall cistern work can need a second visit if tiling is involved. You get a time window, and if we are running late you get a call.
Frequently asked questions
Can you replace a toilet in a McKinnon townhouse or unit?
Yes. Townhouses and unit bathrooms are often tighter to work in and occasionally have an in-wall cistern, which takes longer than a close-coupled swap. We will tell you which you have and what it means for the price before starting.
Do I need a licensed plumber to replace a toilet in Victoria?
Yes. Toilet installation is regulated plumbing work and must be carried out by a licensed or registered plumber. For work over $750 you should also receive a Compliance Certificate.
Can you replace a toilet in one visit?
In most cases, yes. A like-for-like swap where the new suite matches the existing set-out is almost always a single visit.
Can you supply the toilet, or should I buy it?
Either. We can supply a quality WELS-rated suite, or install one you have bought. If you are buying, check the set-out matches your existing waste position.
What is a set-out and why does it matter?
The set-out is the distance from the finished wall to the centre of the waste outlet. If the new suite does not match the old one, the waste has to be adapted or moved. It is the single biggest driver of extra cost.
